Tastemakers: Canyon Ranch: Lifesavers of the Luxury World

A Reflective Experience
It was a crisp bright day in early March. One of those days where you spot the optimistic New Yorker dressed in inappropriate springtime attire yearning for the warmer weather.  Luckily it was because after preaching how reliable the F train had been, it was disappointingly thirty minutes late forcing me to sprint in my black pencil skirt and knee high boots through the flatiron district, dodging pedestrians to make it on time. (I can’t help it but punctuality is my thing.)

It was the Canyon Ranch, Nourish and Inspire Event, hosted at Home Studios. I arrived feeling slightly disheveled but then entered the Zen sundrenched loft space, buzzing with travel and luxury brand luminaries.

Kicking off the afternoon, Maria Bartiromo, gushed with a casual ease about her admiration for the Canyon Ranch philosophy. And longs for the day one will land in NYC.

Scott Uehlein,
The Corporate Chef at Canyon Ranch, spun out innovative dishes (a trio of soups, fresh heart of palm salad, marine stewardship council certified Chilean sea bass and oh the heavenly warm chocolate cake ) featured in his easily to follow and colorfully adorned Nourish cookbook. I popped into the kitchen to praise his culinary creations and have him sign my copy. When, I instantly observed a man’s lively passion for wholesome food:

“There is no better way to show your love to others, than to nourish them through using fresh, seasonal (and local if you can) ingredients, and preparing those ingredients with passion and care. You can taste the difference when your food is prepared with love!”

The room’s energy was invigorating like the air of spirit on the sidelines during the NY marathon. There was a unified sense of pride. Most of us attended the event with an intention to support and honor a brand that has been the proprietor of the motto, Proactive Wellness Is A Lifestyle. But as I glanced around the peaceful space, I experienced a group of people enlightened by something greater.

Lifesavers of a Luxury World
Canyon Ranch has successfully taken on the role of Health Lifesavers. Literally.  Dr. Carmona, Vice Chairman of CR and the 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006), informed us about the powerful impact that Canyon Ranch Institute has had in low-income communities.

The 10 year old non- profit organization’s mission is to catalyze the possibility of optimal health for all people by translating the best practices of Canyon Ranch and our partners to help educate, inspire, and empower every person to prevent disease and embrace a life of wellness.

Inspiring Outcomes
Since its conception they have successfully weaned thousands of patients off of their diabetes medicine and onto a healthful path of living.

The event was executed beautifully and I am grateful that I was asked to attend.  Thanks to their generous gift bags I now am completely addicted to the Canyon Ranch Hydramist and the chef’s homemade granola (p.46 of Nourish), which became our breakfast and snack for the remainder of the week.  But on a greater scope my perspective of Canyon Ranch was expanded and my respect deepened when I learned about the company’s powerful mission to elevate and educate our country about the importance of healthful living one person at a time.
